Recovery Room · Revive Madrid · Salamanca & Justicia
Cold water immersion is the most effective cold exposure therapy available. It's not pointless discomfort—it's science applied to recovery. In our Madrid Recovery Room—Salamanca & Justicia.

The difference matters
Cold showers, creams, cold tap water—they all have one thing in common: they can't replicate what immersion does. When you submerge your body in cold water, water's thermal conductivity is 25 times higher than air's. In 30 seconds, skin temperature plummets. And that triggers something different. Paired with a Finnish sauna, the effect is exponentially amplified.
Immersion · Ice Bath
Full body
Activates the entire autonomic nervous system. Lowers systemic cortisol. Releases norepinephrine in a significant and sustained way.
Alternatives
Partial and superficial
Cold showers, localized cryotherapy, or ice packs trigger localized responses without the systemic impact of full immersion.
Backed by science
Within the first 30 seconds of immersion, physiological reactions are triggered that no other recovery protocol produces with such intensity. Especially effective after HYROX classes or high-intensity workouts.
In less than a minute in cold water, your brain releases a surge of norepinephrine and dopamine—the chemicals of focus and energy. The effect is real, measurable, and lasts for hours after you step out.
Šrámek et al. · European Journal of Applied Physiology, 2000
Cold temperatures cause your blood vessels to constrict and then dilate once you get out — like an internal massage. This clears metabolic waste from your muscles and reduces post-workout soreness by 20% compared to passive rest.
Leeder et al. · British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2012
In the cold, your body activates brown adipose tissue (BAT) — a specialized fat that burns calories to generate heat. Over time, this enhances insulin sensitivity and boosts overall metabolism.
Yoneshiro et al. · Diabetes, 2013
Choosing to step into the cold and pushing through the initial shock trains the part of your brain that regulates stress. Every session is real-world practice in self-control — fully transferable to any high-pressure situation.
Vijgen et al. · PLOS ONE, 2012
After an intense workout, your body experiences inflammation. An ice bath reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines in the blood — the molecules responsible for that heavy, generalized fatigue.
Peake et al. · Journal of Physiology, 2017
Your body relies on a drop in core temperature to initiate sleep. An ice bath session accelerates this process: you'll fall asleep faster and increase your share of deep, restorative sleep.
Song & Sawicki · Sports Medicine, 2021
Pair it with the infrared cabin for a complete recovery protocol — cold therapy to reduce inflammation + NIR light to activate cellular repair.
Beyond muscle recovery
Regular cold exposure delivers benefits that go far beyond post-workout recovery. Activating brown adipose tissue (BAT), improving insulin sensitivity, and lowering chronic inflammatory markers are mechanisms directly linked to longevity.
Controlled cold, within the context of an active lifestyle, is one of the most evidence-backed longevity tools available today. We also offer pressotherapy in Madrid for post-immersion lymphatic drainage — the complete protocol elite athletes already rely on.
Studies show benefits starting at 15°C. We go colder — between 3°C and 9°C — because lower temperatures trigger a stronger nervous system response and more pronounced effects. Colder water, greater impact. Backed by protocol.
The ultimate protocol
The most effective protocol isn't just the ice bath — it's contrast therapy. Alternating between a 90°C Finnish sauna and a 6°C ice bath immersion creates repeated cycles of vasodilation and vasoconstriction. This acts as passive cardiovascular training, scientifically proven to improve vascular elasticity.
You can also round out your session with a NIR infrared cabin at the end to trigger cellular recovery, paired with pressotherapy for lymphatic drainage. All available at Revive Justicia and Salamanca.
Our tubs
Not all ice baths are built the same. Ours feature an active circulation motor and continuous filtration system — keeping the water consistently flowing and pristine. Zero compromise on hygiene.

How to do it right
Stepping into the cold comes with a short but important learning curve. These steps maximize the benefits and minimize the risk.
30 seconds of deep, controlled breathing before stepping in primes your nervous system. Don't hyperventilate — breathe slowly and with intention. This reduces the initial shock.
The first 30 seconds are the hardest. Keep your breathing steady. The peak discomfort usually fades within the first minute. After that, the body adapts.
Goal: 2–3 minutes per round
Don't move around in the water — movement accelerates heat loss. Stay still and keep your breathing slow. That's how you control the experience, not the other way around.
Once out, let your body warm up naturally for 3–5 minutes before heading to the sauna or shower. This active "rewarming" phase has its own documented benefits.
⚠ Before your first session
If you have high blood pressure, heart conditions, Raynaud's, diabetes, or are pregnant, please consult your doctor before using the ice bath. Extreme cold immersion isn't suitable for everyone. Our team is here to guide you. Don't do cold exposure alone for your first time if you have no prior experience — at Revive, there is always someone nearby.

The ice bath is included in all Recovery Room sessions. Choose the duration that best fits your routine.
Plenty of time for 1–2 rounds of sauna-ice bath contrast therapy. The minimum protocol to deliver measurable results in muscle recovery and mood.
3–4 rounds of hot-cold contrast. The ideal amount of time to complete the full protocol and get the most out of combining sauna + ice bath + infrared therapy.

The recommended duration is 2 to 3 minutes per plunge to unlock the core physiological benefits: reduced inflammation, norepinephrine release, and nervous system activation. Beyond 3 minutes, benefits plateau while the risk of hypothermia rises. If it's your first time, start with 60–90 seconds and build up gradually. At Revive, we follow validated protocols, and our team guides you through every session.
Our tubs are kept between 3°C and 9°C, below the standard 10–15°C baseline range. This colder temperature more effectively stimulates the autonomic nervous system, boosts norepinephrine production, and maximizes the adaptive response to cold. The exact temperature may vary slightly depending on the day and location (Justicia or Salamanca).
Yes. No prior experience is needed. At Revive, every session is guided: our team walks you through breathing techniques, posture, and timing before you get in. The key is controlled breathing and listening to your body rather than forcing the clock. Most beginners complete their first plunge with ease. If you have heart conditions or hypertension, consult your doctor beforehand.
For muscle recovery, always after training. If your main goal is maximizing strength and hypertrophy gains, avoid the ice bath immediately post-workout (it can blunt the anabolic signal). The ideal recovery window is 30–60 minutes after finishing your session. Pairing the ice bath with our Finnish sauna in a contrast protocol is the most effective approach for members who train frequently.
Yes. The ice bath is part of the Recovery Room available at both locations: Justicia (Calle Bárbara de Braganza 10, Alonso Martínez metro) and Salamanca. Any membership or session pack allows you to use both studios interchangeably.
