What is a Finnish sauna?

Finnish sauna in Madrid: the science-backed longevity ritual

The Finnish sauna has been used across Northern Europe for over 2,000 years. Not as a luxury—as a necessity. Today, we know exactly why: dry heat triggers a cascade of physiological responses that no other stimulus replicates quite as efficiently.

At Revive, we maintain our saunas between 85°C and 95°C—the sweet spot where scientific evidence shows the greatest benefits. With controlled humidity and no artificial gimmicks. Just wood, stones, and authentic heat. Available in our Recovery Room across both studios—Salamanca and Justicia—so it seamlessly fits into your routine.

What the science says

Benefits of the Finnish sauna
in Madrid: what the science says

We don't talk about vague feelings. We talk about measurable biological mechanisms backed by studies published in the world's most rigorous scientific journals.

A stronger heart

Using the sauna 4–7 times a week reduces the risk of fatal cardiovascular disease by up to 50%, according to a 20-year follow-up study of over 2,000 Finnish men.

Laukkanen et al. · JAMA Internal Medicine, 2018

Growth hormone

Two sauna sessions a day for one week increase GH (Growth Hormone) secretion by up to 200%. Essential for preserving muscle mass and speeding up recovery.

Hannuksela & Ellahham · American Journal of Medicine, 2001

Mental health

Heat triggers the release of β-endorphins and dynorphins, delivering effects similar to a post-workout euphoric state. It also lowers inflammation markers linked to depression.

Hussain & Cohen · Evidence-Based Complementary Medicine, 2018

Heat shock proteins

The HSPs (Heat Shock Proteins) activated by the sauna protect and repair damaged muscle proteins, offering well-documented anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Krause et al. · Journal of Physiology, 2015

Deep sleep

The drop in core body temperature post-sauna mirrors the natural decline that happens as you fall asleep. It speeds up sleep onset and prolongs deep sleep—the most restorative phase.

Hussain et al. · Complementary Therapies in Medicine, 2018

Immune system

Heat stimulates white blood cell production and boosts NK (Natural Killer) cell activity. Regular sauna users experience a lower incidence of colds and flu.

Ernst et al. · Annals of Medicine, 1990

For those who train

Post-workout
Finnish sauna: protocol and benefits
for muscle recovery

You just finished a strength session. Your muscle fibers have micro-tears, local inflammation sets in, and your body begins to repair. Stepping into the sauna right then isn’t an indulgence—it’s an amplifier. Especially effective after HYROX classes, Strength, or any high-intensity workout.

  • +200% post-workout GH. Pairing strength training with a post-workout sauna session boosts growth hormone spikes even further, maximizing protein synthesis.
  • Reduced DOMS. Heat enhances blood flow to damaged tissue, accelerating the clearance of metabolic waste and reducing delayed-onset muscle soreness.
  • More efficient blood vessels. Combining cardiovascular training with sauna therapy enhances vasodilation and endothelial function far more than either alone.
  • Glycogen resynthesis. Improved circulation supports muscle glycogen replenishment, setting you up to perform at your best for your next session.

Wait 15 to 30 minutes after training before entering the sauna. Hydrate well. Start with 10–15 minute sessions if you don't have prior experience.

The contrast protocol

Hot-cold contrast in Madrid:
Finnish sauna + ice bath

Thermal contrast—alternating sauna with ice bath Madrid—amplifies the benefits of both therapies. It is one of the most powerful recovery protocols available.

Heat · Sauna

Vasodilation → massive blood flow to muscles and tissues. HSP activation. GH production. Deep relaxation of the parasympathetic nervous system.

10–20 minutes at 90°C. Breathe deeply. Hydrate before and after.

Cold · Ice Bath

Vasoconstriction → the body pumps blood to the core to protect organs. Leaving the cold, that blood expands back out, "massaging" tissues from the inside.

1–3 minutes in an ice bath at 6–9°C. The effect is immediate and cumulative.

Researchers at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) documented that the repeated cycle of vasodilation-vasoconstriction acts as a "passive cardiovascular workout", significantly improving vascular elasticity.

How to use the sauna

How to use the Finnish sauna:
a practical guide for beginners
and regulars

Whether it's your first session or you've been doing it for years, these are the principles you should never skip.

01

Hydrate beforehand

Drink at least 500 ml of water before entering. You'll lose between 0.5 and 1 liter of sweat per 20-minute session. Without prior hydration, benefits decrease and risk increases.

02

Start short

If you are new to this, start with 8–10 minutes. As your body adapts, you can extend it to 15–20 minutes. Most experts recommend not exceeding 20 minutes per round.

Temperature at Revive: 85–95°C

03

Step out and cool down

Combine with an ice bath (available in the Recovery Room) or simply let your body cool down naturally. Do 2–3 rounds if time permits. This cycle is where the magic happens.

04

Recover

After the last round, rest for 15 to 30 minutes. Hydrate again. The body needs that time to complete the recovery processes activated by the sauna.

The part no one expects

The sauna
is also
community

The Finnish have always known it: the sauna is where the best conversations happen. No phones, no distractions, with heat acting as a social catalyst.

At Revive, the Recovery Room is where the community connects most. After class, between members, with people sharing the same values of effort and well-being.

  • Atmosphere designed for conversation and real rest
  • Members who are already in that active training groove
  • Monthly Recovery Social Club—a different group experience
  • The place where plans that don't fit into the gym are made

If you want to take your longevity protocol one step further, combine the sauna with pressotherapy in Madrid to maximize venous and lymphatic return. It's the complete protocol elite athletes already use—and at Revive, it's available without a waiting list.

Which one to choose?

Finnish sauna vs infrared

Finnish Sauna · Revive

Intense convective heat

Triggers more intense physiological responses: higher perspiration, greater thermal stress, and activation of HSP (Heat Shock Proteins). Ideal for deep muscle recovery, cardiovascular benefits, and thermal contrast with ice baths.

NIR Infrared Cabin · Revive

Deep cellular penetration

NIR radiation acts directly on the mitochondria, ideal for cellular recovery, collagen production, and those sensitive to intense heat. Lower ambient temperature (45–60°C) with deeper tissue effect.

They are complementary, not competing. At Revive, you can combine both within the same Recovery Room session. Recommended sequence: sauna → ice bath → infrared, depending on your daily goal. Not sure which one is right for you? Message us →

The strongest scientific evidence — the study by Laukkanen et al. published in JAMA Internal Medicine (2018) — shows that the greatest cardiovascular benefits are achieved with 4 or more sessions per week. For muscle recovery and better sleep, even 2–3 weekly sessions produce measurable results. If you are just starting out, twice a week is an ideal frequency for your body to adapt.

They use different heat mechanisms with complementary benefits. The Finnish sauna uses convective dry heat at 85–95°C and warms the body from the outside, inducing intense sweating and activating heat shock proteins (HSP). The infrared cabin uses infrared radiation that penetrates deeper into muscle tissue at lower temperatures (45–60°C), making it more suitable for people sensitive to intense heat. At Revive, you can combine both in the same Recovery Room session.

Yes, but leave a 15–30-minute window after your workout to allow your heart rate to partially come down. Combining strength or high-intensity training with a sauna session is one of the most powerful recovery protocols: it boosts growth hormone secretion, accelerates metabolite clearance, and reduces delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). It is especially effective after HYROX classes, Strength, or Open Gym.

Yes. The Recovery Room with Finnish sauna, ice bath, and infrared therapy is available at both locations: Justicia (Calle Bárbara de Braganza 10, a 2-minute walk from the Alonso Martínez metro station) and Salamanca. You can use either location interchangeably with your membership or session pack.
